Today in Yogyakarta is Garebeg Maulud. Garebeg Maulud is held as a commemoration of the birth of Muhammad the Prophet. The night before the ceremony, the Sultan and the royal family attend biography readings of Muhammad the Prophet at the Grand Mosque.

Pekalongan is one of the main centres for Batik on the island of Java. It is an important textile centre famed for its hand-waxed and stamp-printed batik using distinct motifs (pola). It is the third leading batik producer in Indonesia after the cities of Yogyakarta and Solo.

Numplak Wajik is a ceremony of Wajik making (Wajik is the traditional food made of sticky rice and palm sugar). The ceremony is held at the Palace in Yogyakarta in the course of preparing Gunungan for the Garebeg. Travellers are free to observe this ceremony.
