Indonesia Getting Around

First Aid Kits are a Necessity When Travelling

mini-first-aid-kit.jpgIf I had a dollar for every time someone said to me “I don’t need a First Aid Kit, I’m on holiday. Besides, I’ve got some band-aids in my bag”. Whether it be your first or one-hundredth trip to Indonesia, it is really imperative to carry some kind of first Aid Kit, and, know how to use what is in them. Some people might scoff at this suggestion, but, having a first aid kit with me on all of my journeys has helped me out in many situations. You don’t have to go out and buy the most expensive one on the market. Indeed, you could make your own. Most outdoor stores sell the basic package and then you can fill it with what you think you will need. Red Cross sell an excellent array of first aid kits to suit most activities. Personally, I use the Red Cross Backpack First Aid Kit as I find it convenient to carry as well as being light, and, it stores quite nicely in my backpack.

Plane Delayed, You Get Paid

What is it with Garuda Indonesia? They are an excellent airline to fly with, and, now they are in the black after so long in the red, you‘d think they would get their flights out on time. I talked to a lot of Australians holidaying in Bali whilst I was over on the island and they complained bitterly about flight delays (Garuda Indonesia flies 27 times from Australia to Bali per week (23 times direct to Bali, plus 4 times a week via Jakarta with flights departing from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin). However, if they don’t get things right soon then the passengers could be in for a bonus. Here’s an excellent article from Bali Discovery about the possible compensation.

Cycling in Bali

mini-cycle1.jpgThere is no doubt about it, getting out on the open road on a bicycle is one way of getting healthy. It’s not only that, you can travel at your own pace, stop when you want to revive the body (especially after ascending rather large hills!), and, breathe in the fresh air. I am just about up for a new Mountain Bike but somehow I can’t see me managing to ascend hundreds of feet up a mountainside or take on jungle tracks on two wheels now that I am a tad older!. Nowadays I much prefer cycling the streets. Everywhere you go in Indonesia you will see the locals and some tourists getting out on the road and peddling. There are places in the tourist strip where you can hire bicycles and even some of the upmarket hotels have them for hire. In Bali, there are specialised tour groups that can take you around the island in safety, show you places you never thought were there, and on top of that, these groups generally supply you with lunch and drinks. If you are the super-healthy and adventurous type then there are also those groups that specialise in the areas of rugged terrain.

Garuda to Fly to Kendari: South Sulawesi

mini-garuda.jpgWhenever I visit Sulawesi, I more often than not prefer to hire a jeep and drive around, mainly due to the fact that you can stop when you want and you get to see more of the countryside and its people. There is good news however for those who prefer to take the quick journey between cities. Now, Garuda Indonesia plans to fly from Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province, to Kendari, capital of Southeast Sulawesi province, at least once a day in June at the latest.A survey was conducted in which Monginsidi Airport in Kendari has met the requirements for wide-bodied planes to land making it an ideal connection point.

2007 - A Disastrous Year for Travelling

The first day of 2007 was marked by a jetliner going missing, in what some later saw as a sign of things to come: It was the first in what was to be a long line of accidents. The disappearance of the Boeing 737-400 aircraft operated by Adam Air tragically left 102 victims listed as “missing” for weeks, before the government confirmed that they had died after crashing into the Majene Sea off West Sulawesi.
