Papua Enters Venture with Merpati: Jayapura, Papua
The Tolikara regency administration has forged a joint venture with PT Merpati Airlines, investing Rp 7.4 billion (US$822,000) in a Fokker 27 plane to serve the Jayapura-Wamena route.The initial phase of the cooperation, during which all profits will go to the administration, will last seven months.

Museum Dirgantara Mandala: Yogyakarta, Central Java
The Indonesian Air Force has an excellent but little known air museum in Yogyakarta called the Museum Dirgantara Mandala. The museum is located behind the main Yogyakarta airport. All aircraft are under cover and beautifully maintained in static condition. A tribute to the curator who must work with a very limited budget.

Direct International Flights to Reopen: Yogyakarta, Central Jav
Yogyakarta’s tourism industry is expected to bounce back this year thanks to the reopening of direct international flights from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, by the end of this month, says a tourism official. Yogyakarta Tourism Office head Tazbir said Yogyakarta would recommence direct international flights as local tour operators were convinced the province was ready to host foreign visitors again.

Visas to Enter Indonesia
Unfortunately the days of obtaining a free 60 day visa on arrival in Indonesia are long gone. Most western travellers have to obtain a VOA or Visa on Arrival. The cost for this is US$10 for a stay up to 7 days and US$25 for a 30 day visa. The visa is obtained at most entry points in Indonesia such as Java and Bali.

Four Indonesian Airlines Expected to Get Top Safety Ratings
The Transportation Ministry expects at least four national airlines to earn category-one ratings this October after successfully making significant improvements in their flight safety standards. According to the Director General of Air Transportation Budhi M. Suyitno, the four airlines qualifying for category-one or good ratings, namely PT Garuda Indonesia, PT Mandala Airlines, Air Fast and Premier Airlines. The latter two are non-schedule airlines.

New Airport: Mimika, Papua
Mimika is constructing a new airport to reduce the isolation of remote areas in the regency, says a local official. Chief of the local air transportation office, Markus Raturoma, said the new airport, already under construction, was located in Tsinga village, a mountainous area in Tembagapura, 1.9 kilometers above sea level.

International Airport Construction : Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara
West Nusa Tenggara Governor HL Serinata officially commenced the construction work of Lombok International Airport on Saturday, by laying a foundation stone.The new airport will be located in Tanak Awu village, Central Lombok Regency, around 35 kilometers from Mataram. The ceremony was attended by West Nusa Tenggara provincial officers, Central Lombok Regent HL Wiratmaja and president of state-owned airport management company PT Angkasa Pura Heru Legowo.

Compensation for Flight Delays in Indonesia
Most of you that have travelled around Indonesia know that flight delays are inevitable at on time or another due to various situations and factors. It’s frustrating and damn annoying but there isn’t anything you can do about it. The adage of ‘rubber time or ‘jam karet’ seems to apply constantly. But, be pleased and not excited because I can never see this being enforced, it seems that the government wants to compel airlines to compensate passengers for late flight delays and other situations.

Garuda to Reopen Jakarta-Pontianak Route
National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will reopen the Jakarta - Pontianak flight route beginning October 8, 2007 after it terminated its service to the West Kalimantan provincial capital in 2005 as the Antara News explains.

Lombok International Airport to open in 2010
PT Angkasa Pura I is targeting to commence operations of a new international airport in Lombok, Bali’s near neighbor to the east, by 2010. To be built at an estimated cost of Rp. 665 billion (approximately US$72.3 million), the new airport for Lombok will be located in the central province of that island as Bali Discovery explains.
