What is it with Garuda Indonesia? They are an excellent airline to fly with, and, now they are in the black after so long in the red, you‘d think they would get their flights out on time. I talked to a lot of Australians holidaying in Bali whilst I was over on the island and they complained bitterly about flight delays (Garuda Indonesia flies 27 times from Australia to Bali per week (23 times direct to Bali, plus 4 times a week via Jakarta with flights departing from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Darwin). However, if they don’t get things right soon then the passengers could be in for a bonus. Here’s an excellent article from Bali Discovery about the possible compensation.

Most of you that have travelled around Indonesia know that flight delays are inevitable at on time or another due to various situations and factors. It’s frustrating and damn annoying but there isn’t anything you can do about it. The adage of ‘rubber time or ‘jam karet’ seems to apply constantly. But, be pleased and not excited because I can never see this being enforced, it seems that the government wants to compel airlines to compensate passengers for late flight delays and other situations.
Whenever I visit Sulawesi, I more often than not prefer to hire a jeep and drive around, mainly due to the fact that you can stop when you want and you get to see more of the countryside and its people. There is good news however for those who prefer to take the quick journey between cities. Now, Garuda Indonesia plans to fly from Makassar, capital of South Sulawesi province, to Kendari, capital of Southeast Sulawesi province, at least once a day in June at the latest.A survey was conducted in which Monginsidi Airport in Kendari has met the requirements for wide-bodied planes to land making it an ideal connection point.

Unfortunately the days of obtaining a free 60 day visa on arrival in Indonesia are long gone. Most western travellers have to obtain a VOA or Visa on Arrival. The cost for this is US$10 for a stay up to 7 days and US$25 for a 30 day visa. The visa is obtained at most entry points in Indonesia such as Java and Bali.
