Ambon is the capital city of Maluku as well as the main administration point for the Moluccas. It was the centre of the spice trade in the 17th century, and is located off the much larger island of Seram. Ambon Island has retained many buildings of great historical significance, unfortunately a lot was bombed-out during The Second World War. Ambon is part of a chain of volcanic islands that form a circle around the Banda Sea. An irregular shaped island, it is 51 km long and seemingly almost divided into two. To the south-eastern and the smallest part of the island is a peninsula called Leitimor. This is connected to Hitoe in the north by a narrow stretch of land. Ambon city lies on the north-west of Leitimor, facing Hitoe. The harbour in Ambon is considered a safe harbour and named Amboyna Bay.

Yogyakarta in Central Java is one of those cities that is a drawcard for New year’s Eve. Perhaps this has a lot to do with the friendliness of the Yogyanese and of course their willingness to party non-stop. As I mentioned in a previous article, I have had many New Year’s Eve in Yogya and it really is the place to be for your celebration of bringing in the New Year. For decades Chinese New Year treats known locally known as kue keranjang have also been enjoyed by Betawi families in the capital. Beng Sui opens his stall each day from 5:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in a small lane behind Pasar Jatinegara in East Jakarta. He said many of his Betawian customers were Muslim women. He said last year he sold five tons of kue keranjang during Chinese New Year festivities, which traditionally last for four weeks and end with the celebration of Cah Go Meh on the 15th day after Imlek.

Designated as a national marine park, Karimunjawa is a chain of 27 of many small islands. These include Karimunjawa Island, Kemujan Island, Menjangan Besar Island, and Menjangan kecil Island. Practically all of Karimunjawa Islands are sand beaches. However in some areas of the Kemojan Islands there are mangrove beaches. Visitors to the Karimun Jawa islands, located some 50 miles north of Semarang, can also enjoy sunbathing or fishing. The area is famous as a haven for anglers because of its many fish.

There is losmen accommodation available on Batam Island but it is not of good quality and is best avoided mainly because the price is grossly inflated. These are mainly found down back lanes. A majority of places to stay at are starred hotels ranging from 3 star right up to ultra-luxurious 5 star. If you are on a budget then the smaller hotels are nice places to stay. Like anywhere in Indonesia it is recommended you bargain the cost of the room and do check the room out first before you commit and had over your precious Ben Franklins.
