Regencies Preserve Ciremai Springs: Cirebon, West Java

The Cirebon and Kuningan regency administrations have agreed to work together to preserve springs at Mount Ciremai National Park that are a vital source of drinking water for residents in the two regencies. Four springs have been set out as pilot projects for the program, which will cost Rp 1.5 billion (US$163,043). The four are Cibodas, Babelan, Astana and Cigusti springs.

“The funds will be covered by both the Cirebon and Kuningan regency administrations,” Cirebon Regent Dedi Supardi said.

The program, he said, was also intended to continue work managing the environment within the national park’s compound while preserving the source of drinking water for at least two million residents of the regencies.

The number of springs in the park has sharply decreased over the past nine years, from 430 springs recorded in 1998 to 164 springs currently as reported in the Jakarta Post.
