Ancient Statues: Kediri, East Java

kediri.jpg A sugar cane farm at Gayam village, Kediri, East Java, was a tranquil place until villager Maksum discovered six statues there, believed to be a legacy of the 12th-Century Kediri kingdom.

They are the statues of Dewa Brahma (Hindu god of Creation), Dewa Bayu (god of Wind), Lembu Andini (an animal ridden by the gods), Dewi Durga Mahesa Sura Mandini (Supreme goddess), Yoni (A symbol of the female genitals) and Dewa Syiwa (god of destruction).

The discovery quickly drew crowds of people eager to see the ancient statues. The location has now become a tourist attraction.

Locals now make a little money by selling drinks and snacks, and pictures of the six statues.
