The Bogor Botanical Gardens: Bogor, West Java

When it comes to any form of horticulture then I am there. I am what you call a keen gardener. Yeah I know, sounds crazy for a guy but it’s this passion I have for beauty in the floral world of Indonesia. There are numerous botanical gardens in Indonesia including an excellent one at Candikunung on the island of Bali.

Baturaden: Central Java

Indonesia is a country renowned for its fabulous and sometimes all too volatile mountains and volcanoes. The mountain known as Slamet in Central Java has been among these renowned and volatile peaks relatively recently and as one travels toward the resort area of Baturaden one is a little in awe of its great width and height.

The Craftsmen of Tanjung Batu: South Sumatra

The incessant clanging of hammer strikes can be heard as one enters Limbang Jaya village, Tanjung Batu district, South Sumatra, where the skillful hands of steel craftsmen busily shape metal into utensils and implements. The same atmosphere prevails in the district’s other two villages; Tanjung Pinang and Tanjung Laut. Craftsmen from the three villages, who have preserved their ancestor’s art of steel crafting, have helped make the area famous as the steel production center of South Sumatra.

Glodok – Chinatown: Jakarta, West Java

glodok.jpgBeing married to an Indonesian-born Chinese Bhuddist it’s only natural that I have a deep interest in Chinese culture and those parts of Indonesia where the persons of Chinese descent reside. In every major city in the Archipelago there is a Chinatown (pecinan) and one of my favourites is in Semarang even though I am entranced by the Chinatown in Yogyakarta where I lived. But it is in Jakarta where there s probably the most interesting of these areas – Glodok in West Jakarta.

Klithik Puppet Show: Kudus, Central Java

His voice was trembling and shaken, no longer clear like it used to be — but 76-year-old puppet master Ki Sumarlan was doing his best to entertain his audience. The puppet master was playing the fighting scene between Damarwulan, a warrior of the Majapahit kingdom, and Minakjinggo, the ruler of Blambangan. The fierceness of the battle was portrayed through the strong sounds of the Javanese gamelan orchestra — comprised of some 15 players — in the backdrop.

Mahkota Dewa Tea: Yogyakarta, Central Java

Give me an iced tea any day!. I am not a drinker of alcohol and thus find a lot of enjoyment in sipping an iced tea after a trek or when just relaxing with friends. At home I would probably consume fifteen mugs of tea per day and always black tea.

Parahyangan Food: Bandung, West Java

No, I am not talking about Bali, but about Parahiyangan (para means several, hiyang, god) as the Sundanese highlands are called. The highland Sundanese treat their environment with care and respect. Their diet largely consists of local produce: high quality rice, fruit and vegetables. Over the course of time, the West Java capital, Bandung, has flourished, serving its guests nutritious food, with a good variety of freshwater fish and raw, crispy vegetables.

Patiayam Fossil Finds: Kudus, Central Java

Rosida Asmi never thought she would find the fossil of a prehistoric animal while doing her laundry in Gandu River, close to her home in Terban village, Jekulo district, in the Central Java town of Kudus. On Dec. 20 last year, a dull-colored white piece of wood protruding from the river caught her attention. She poured some water on it and was surprised. Half convinced, the 14-year-old high school thought she had found a fossil.
